Sound Lab - Example Sounds

15th June 2024

This article gives seven examples of sounds you can produce with Sound Lab, the simple single-board analogue synthesiser that I described in the earlier article Sound Lab - a Simple Analogue Synthesiser:

The examples illustrate the wide range of sounds it's capable of producing. Each example includes an audio sample, and a diagram showing the control positions so you can reproduce it on your own Sound Lab if you've built one.

Police car siren

Audio sample

Controls

This uses the Envelope Generator module with a long Attack and Decay to modulate the Oscillator module.

Howling wind

Audio sample

Controls

SoundLabPanelWind.gif

This uses the Noise module, filtered by the Filter module modulated by the Envelope Generator module. Adjust the Filter module Frequency and Modulation controls to change the characteristics of the wind.

Hysterical laughter

Audio sample

Controls

SoundLabPanelHysterical.gif

Adjust the Oscillator module LFO modulation control for the best effect.

Irregular drumming

Audio sample

Controls

SoundLabPanelDrumming.gif

Adjust the LFO module Frequency control to adjust the speed of the drumming, and the Envelope Generator module Decay control to fine-tune the irregular beat.

Old bell

Audio sample

Controls

SoundLabPanelBell.gif

Set the LFO module Frequency control by ear for the best sound. Adjust the Envelope Generator module Decay control to adjust the rate of the bell strikes, the Oscillator module Frequency control to adjust the pitch of the bell, and the Filter module Frequency control to adjust the timbre of the bell.

Machinery

Audio sample

Controls

SoundLabPanelMachinery.gif

Adjust the Envelope Generator module Decay control and LFO module Frequency control to change the characteristics of the machinery sound.

Birdsong

If you turn the Envelope Generator module Repeat switch to Off, you can then press the Gate button to make the bird sing.
